02Getting started with the GLM API
- Register on bigmodel.cn (China) or z.ai (international) and create an API key in the console.
- Call it over HTTP, with the official Python / Java SDK, or with the OpenAI SDK (compatible) – see docs.bigmodel.cn.
- Billing is per token. Per the official docs, GLM models average about 1 token ≈ 1.6 Chinese characters; the exact count is in the usage field of each response.

What is GLM?
GLM (General Language Model) is Zhipu’s family of large models. The official docs describe it as supporting natural-language instructions, multi-turn chat, code generation and agent use, served through a standard API.
How do I get a GLM API key?
Register on bigmodel.cn (or z.ai for the international platform), create an API key in the console, then follow the quick start at docs.bigmodel.cn. The API is OpenAI-SDK compatible and has official Python and Java SDKs.

What is the difference between Zhipu Qingyan and the open platform?
Zhipu Qingyan (chatglm.cn) is the chat app for everyone; the open platform (bigmodel.cn / z.ai) is for developers who call GLM through the API and pay per token.
Can I download GLM models?
Many GLM models are open-weight (13 of the 14 we track): download them from the zai-org organisation on GitHub / Hugging Face. To use the chat app, download Zhipu Qingyan instead.
