Giving agents memory across sessions: memory layer or rules file?
For coding agents a project rules file is often enough; apps for end users that need long-term memory may need a dedicated memory layer.

Scenario: Build RAG and process documents →
Symptoms
- You re-explain the project in every new session
- An in-app assistant does not remember user preferences
Common causes
- Context is wiped at the end of each session with nothing persisted
How to fix
- Coding: put stable project knowledge in rules files such as AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.md that the agent reads automatically
- Apps that must remember preferences and facts: evaluate memory layers such as Mem0, Letta and Zep
- When relationships and timelines matter (who said what, when), look at the knowledge-graph-based Graphiti
- Mind privacy and deletion: let users view and clear what is remembered
