// How-to · Share rules and skills across agents
What Agent Skills (SKILL.md) are and how to reuse them
A skill is a folder whose core is a SKILL.md with YAML front matter (name, description), optionally with scripts and references. The agent loads it when the description matches the task, which saves context compared with stuffing everything into a rules file.

Scenario: Share rules and skills across agents →
Symptoms
- Rules files keep growing and most of the content is irrelevant to the current task
Common causes
- All instructions are loaded at once; there is no on-demand loading
How to fix
- Package a reusable procedure (e.g. writing release notes, handling PDFs) as a skill folder containing
SKILL.md - Give SKILL.md a clear
nameand adescriptionthat says when to use it - Keep long references and scripts in the same folder and point to them from SKILL.md
- Use the official and community skill repositories (see software below) as templates
- Support for the skill format differs between agents; check each one’s docs first
