Scenario: Code with AI: choose tools, keep quality →
Symptoms
- You can’t decide which to buy and fear paying twice
- One tool felt awkward and you’re not sure if it is the tool or your workflow
Common causes
- The tools have similar capabilities and all market “agents”
- Many pricing tiers mix monthly plans, requests and tokens
How to fix
- Want diffs and per-hunk accept in a VS Code-style editor: choose Cursor or GitHub Copilot
- Terminal-first, frequent multi-file changes: choose Claude Code or Codex CLI
- Already paying for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro: use the bundled Codex or Claude Code before buying more
- Lowest budget: GitHub Copilot Pro at $10/mo; verified students get Copilot free
- Bring your own key, Chinese or local models: open-source Cline, Aider or OpenCode
- Whatever you pick, add an AGENTS.md at the repo root and make the agent run tests before editing
