How to disclose AI use in a paper
Major journals and ICMJE agree: AI cannot be an author; describe how AI assisted writing or analysis when you submit; authors are responsible for everything. Exact placement and wording follow the target journal’s policy.

Symptoms
- You are unsure whether language polishing must be declared
- You worry AI use will get the paper rejected
Common causes
- Policies differ by journal
- Putting AI-generated citations or data into a paper is misconduct
How to fix
- Read the target journal’s AI policy before submitting (Nature, Elsevier and others have dedicated pages)
- Record tools, versions and purposes (e.g. “ChatGPT for English editing”, “AI-assisted code”)
- Per ICMJE, describe AI use in the cover letter and the relevant section of the paper (methods, acknowledgements…)
- Never list AI as an author; AI-generated images are usually tightly restricted
- Check every AI-provided fact and citation and make sure nothing is plagiarised
Notes
- Journal and university rules change; follow the latest official policy
