Is this open-source AI project still maintained? How to tell
AI open-source projects turn over fast: stalls, archives, renames and moves to closed source are common. A few minutes checking some signals before you choose can save you from building on a dead project.

Scenario: Choose tools and avoid pitfalls →
Symptoms
- Issues go unanswered for months
- A dependency is suddenly archived or renamed
Common causes
- Tools were chosen by star count without checking maintenance
How to fix
- Check whether the repository is archived and whether the README starts with a migration notice
- Check the dates of the latest commit and release; be wary of no release for six months or more
- Check the number of committers and the issue close rate over the past year; single-maintainer projects are riskier
- See the “Maintained” and “Latest version” fields in our software profiles (“to be verified” means not yet checked)
- For stalled projects, start with the successor named in the official announcement, then compare others in the same category
Notes
- Maintenance status in our profiles comes from research datasets and is refreshed periodically; the repository itself is authoritative
