01gemini 4 carbon: overview

What happened

On October 28 (US time) Google DeepMind announced Gemini 4 Carbon, two weeks after Gemini 4 Argon became available. Google says Carbon improves across coding, agentic tasks and cybersecurity. It scored 59 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5, ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 (58) and GPT-6 Astra (57); Argon scored 50. Google reports 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro, 54.8% on ExploitGym and 71.0% on CWE-bench, and says Carbon writes secure code more than twice as well as Argon. Because of its offensive-security capability, Carbon is first going to vetted cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program while it undergoes voluntary pre-deployment testing with the US government; there is no date for developers or consumers. Google says pricing will match Argon at $2/$10 per million input/output tokens.

Why it matters

It is Google's second frontier model in a month, showing release cycles at leading labs have shrunk to weeks. Carbon does not lead everywhere: in Google's own table it trails GPT-6 Astra on FrontierSWE 2 (61.2% vs 65.5%) and Claude Opus 5.5 on OSWorld (81.5% vs 87.2%), and on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index it scores 59 against Opus 5.5's 62. Artificial Analysis lists a standard price of $4/$20 with a 50% launch discount, which differs from Google's stated pricing. Staged access based on cyber risk is becoming a new release pattern, and developers can see the results but cannot yet use the model.

Who it affects

Enterprise AI buyers and developers, cybersecurity vendors and defenders, and Gemini API and Google Cloud customers.
