On October 29 France's Mistral AI released the weights of Mistral Large 4 (nicknamed Le Chonk) on Hugging Face. The model was previewed on October 6 and has since gone through partner testing and further reinforcement learning. It is one of the strongest open-weight models from a Western developer and brings European and US open models close to Chinese open models on coding and cybersecurity; ZDNET notes it scores 48 on the overall index, one point below GLM-5.3. Mistral positions it as a "sovereign" cyber-defence tool that companies and governments can run on premises without risk of being cut off, in contrast with Google limiting Gemini 4 Carbon to vetted defenders.
