ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini: should you pay, and for which?
For most everyday writing and Q&A the free tiers are enough. A ~$20 plan is worth it only if you keep hitting limits or need stronger models or features such as deep research, and usually one plan is enough.

Scenario: Everyday work: writing, translation and slides →
Symptoms
- You pay for several plans and use each a little
- The free tier keeps saying you have reached the limit
Common causes
- You have never compared vendors on the same task
- Tier differences are unclear
How to fix
- Take your 3 most common real tasks (weekly report, fixing an English email, summarising a PDF) and run them on 2–3 free tiers
- Pay only when free clearly falls short: ChatGPT Go $8/mo, Plus $20/mo; Claude Pro $20/mo; Google AI Pro $19.99/mo
- Heavy Google Docs / Gmail users: Gemini; lots of long-form writing and editing: Claude; broadest features: ChatGPT
- In mainland China without payment or network hassle: Doubao, Kimi, DeepSeek are free
- Review every quarter and cancel what you rarely use
Notes
- Prices come from our subscriptions page (official pages, checked 2026-10-10/13) and may have changed; the vendor site wins
- Before using company confidential data, check that your employer allows it or has an enterprise plan
